Soft Threshold
In an age of acceleration, we gather to remember slower ways of being human.
Presented as part of SF Design Week 2026, Soft Threshold is an immersive multi-sensory experience exploring the meeting of cultures through space, sound, scent, objects, and storytelling. Rather than offering a guided path, the experience invites visitors into a shared sensory environment shaped by Eastern, Western, and Mediterranean influences.
Responding to this year’s theme, Multiplicity, Soft Threshold reflects on how art and culture can create new forms of belonging in a world increasingly defined by speed, fragmentation, and AI.
Featuring contributions from cultural leaders, artists, and community builders including Kayci Bi, Marian Chaney, Evelisa Genova, Xinye Lin, and Tong Zhang.

She Carries Time: Repetition as Presence
Join us for a durational piano installation by Dr. Tong Zhang, presented as part of Aetna Music & Arts Foundation’s Well-Being Concert Series. The work draws from a musical history in which women’s voices were often underrepresented. A short composition by Fanny Mendelssohn is extended through continuous repetition. Each iteration carries shifts in touch, pacing, and attention, allowing the melody to unfold over time.
The installation takes place as a sustained act of listening. At any moment, participants may select a colored card; the pianist responds by shaping subsequent iterations of the piece. Sound is formed through this exchange between performer and listeners.
In collaboration with Atelier for Healing, the installation takes place as part of The Muses Collective, bringing together women artists for an exhibition centered on mental health, healing, resilience, and empowerment.

Stories in Sound: A Well-Being Concert
Join us for an intimate piano performance by Dr. Tong Zhang, presented as part of Aetna Music and Arts Foundation’s Well-Being Concert Series. The musical program features composers Frédéric Chopin and Joe Hisaishi, offering a quiet and reflective listening experience that invites audiences to slow down, listen deeply, and reconnect with themselves while sharing space with others.
In collaboration with Atelier for Healing, the concert opens the We are America Storytelling event, which features an afternoon of storytelling and creativity by Bay Area artists and filmmakers.
